Tarot On A Daily Basis
by msesheta
I was talking with a friend of mine and she asked an important question. It's one that I haven't really thought about for a long time but is important. How do I use my tarot cards on a daily basis?
When you get your first deck the only thing that comes to mind is laying out a spread and trying to understand the meaning. The tarot is much more than a divining tool. It opens up your world; it helps you to understand your feelings, your reactions, your interactions with those you love.
Isabel Kliegman says it best in her book "Tarot and the Tree of Life: Finding Everyday wisdom in the Minor Arcana":
"The key to their usefulness is their availability. If I am caught up in the grief of loss, The Five of Cups reflects my pain. My anxiety, regret, and isolation are mirrored back to me with force and compassion by the Nine of Swords...when I am standing my ground under a challenge, my experience is revealed to me in the most straightforward way by the Seven of Wands."
Tarot cards with all their rich symbolism and history are a way to cope with our daily lives. If you pull one card in the morning it can help you see yourself or your problems in a fresh way. The card cuts through your excuses and justifications; it can take you to the real heart of the matter. Take the image of that card with you; think about it while you're at work, while you're shopping, while you're dealing with neighbours or family. Let it lead you to a real understanding of what is going on in your life.
Perhaps you draw the Seven of Swords. The Waite card shows a man stealing the swords of his enemies. Does it matter that they belong to his foes? He is taking something that doesn't belong to him; he is being dishonest. You can ask yourself, "Am I being totally honest with my husband? With myself?" Or perhaps it's a warning to look carefully at your surroundings or your relationships. "Am I being taken advantage of? What can I do in this situation?"
One of my favourite things to do is to enter the card as one of the characters. What does it feel like to be the smirking victor in the Five of Swords? What about the man walking away from the situation? Or the small character in the background who looks devasted by his loss?
Spend time with the cards. Ask them questions, ask yourself how you feel, who you want to be. If you make the Tarot a part of your daily life you will be enriched and empowered.
